How to calculate overs per hour
Required over rate for an innings block:
Required overs / hour = (Overs planned ÷ Minutes allowed) × 60
Actual over rate so far:
Actual overs / hour = (Overs bowled ÷ Minutes elapsed) × 60
If actual rate falls below the required rate, the bowling side is behind — local playing conditions may apply warnings or fielding restrictions.
ICC and local league timing benchmarks
International limited-overs events publish strict over-rate rules and penalties. Club cricket usually sets a simpler innings clock (for example ~75–90 minutes for 20 overs) plus drinks breaks. Always use your tournament booklet — not international penalties — unless your league explicitly adopts them.
- Agree start time, innings allowance, and drinks before toss
- Pause the clock for genuine interruptions (injury, rain, lost ball)
- Announce when a side is falling behind so captains can speed up
Managing match pace
Slow over rates frustrate batters waiting and compress evening fixtures. Captains can rotate fielders faster, have the next bowler ready, and avoid long mid-pitch conferences. Scorers help by confirming the over number loudly at the end of each over.
STUMPED’s live scoring UI is built for one-handed speed so the scorer is never the bottleneck between deliveries.
Frequently asked questions
What penalty applies for slow over rate?
It depends on your competition. Some leagues use warnings only; others restrict fielders outside the circle. Check local playing conditions.
Does this calculator replace the official clock?
No. It is a planning aid for captains and organisers. The umpire’s match clock is authoritative.
