What is net run rate in cricket?

Net run rate (NRR) is the standard tie-breaker in limited-overs tournaments when two or more teams finish level on points. It compares how quickly your side scores with how quickly it concedes runs.

A positive NRR means you score faster than you concede. A negative NRR means the opposite. Organisers use NRR so leagues can separate sides without extra playoffs.

Official NRR formula

Use this formula across completed matches in the tournament:

NRR = (Runs scored ÷ Overs faced) − (Runs conceded ÷ Overs bowled)

• Runs scored ÷ overs faced = your team run rate
• Runs conceded ÷ overs bowled = opponent run rate
• Subtract the second from the first for net run rate

Overs use cricket notation: 19.4 means 19 overs and 4 balls (19 + 4/6). If a batting side is all out before using its full allocation, most playing conditions still count the full overs allotted as overs faced — follow your tournament booklet.

Worked example

Team A scores 320 runs in 50.0 overs and concedes 290 in 50.0 overs:

• For rate = 320 ÷ 50 = 6.400
• Against rate = 290 ÷ 50 = 5.800
• NRR = 6.400 − 5.800 = +0.600

One heavy defeat can drag NRR for the rest of an event — which is why captains chase big wins and protect margins when defending totals.

When NRR decides a tournament
